The Study of Suicide by Emile Durkheim. In this article, it talks about the ideas that Durkheim believes causes suicide. At first, it was said that he believed that at first, people would commit suicide because of their religion between the Catholics and the protestants. But in the time of making this theory, he theorized that there were more suicides in social insistence than religion. So then, Durkheim making the Typology of suicide. The different types were Anomic, Altruistic, Egoistic, and Fatalistic suicides. Starting off with Anomic, now Anomic suicide is when a person experiences anomie, or a sense of disconnection from society, and a feeling of not belonging. This is caused because of social cohesion. Anomie occurs when the person starts to have serious, life-changing situations happen to them, that they don’t understand how to deal with them, that they will most likely commit suicide. The following type is Altruistic, for this, it is mainly about how people commit suicide for religious purposes. Like when people used to hijack planes or the people who drove planes into the Trade Center, those people died because of their religious beliefs. The next is Egoistic, with egoistic, people would commit suicide because of a loss. Usually, the loss of a loved one, but on some occasions, people would suicide because of the loss of a friend, or disconnection of a friend. The elderly were the people most affected by egoistic suicide because they were the most with loss in their life. The last and final type is Fatalistic. With Fatalistic, this mainly deals with the people who feel hard oppression of society on them. Usually, this mainly affects prisoner, with people feeling harsh about what they did. But is has been said to be that ordinary people also feel this, when in an argument of even oppression from other people. I felt that this article was very important, the reading was very in-depth, and I feel that Durkheim did a great job with this very hard topic to talk about. I did research and found out mainly the same, but what I also found out was that many people in the army also have a high suicide rate, and I feel that, that should also be a type of suicide, for the people who see, and experience things, ordinary people don't. I personally have not dealt with anything along the lines of suicide but I understand this is a very hard topic to talk about.
