Socialization and Enculturation

Socialization is that the social world is changed from generation to generation, it is also a process a society re-creates. With socialization, we get a sense of self and emotion. There are two types of socialization, one that happens in a family known as primary socialization. An example of this is when little children learn from older siblings or their parents' good and bad behaviors. Or when you are learning table manners your parents will tell you to chew with mouth closed and they will give you an exaggerated example and you will follow. The second type of socialization is secondary socialization, this is socialization taken place somewhere else than with the family such as school, work, sports teams, etc. An example of this is when you are reading out loud and you come to a word that you don’t know how to pronounce, the teacher will pronounce it and you will repeat the word and continue.
Enculturation in a way compliments socialization. Enculturation is the process in which we learn about the culture we live in. It also gives us the ideals our culture has and gives us our own behaviors and beliefs. The media is an example of enculturation because Hip-Hop is not just music, it is also a culture and a lifestyle. In parts of the world Hip- Hop is used to influencing people to vote. Another example is when we are taught history because we learn about other cultures and more about our own.
