Machine Translation and the Difficulty of It

The article I read was Machine Translation by M. Kay. The subject is how machine translation has not yet been achieved and why it is such a difficult challenge to tackle. This is mostly because languages have so many complex rules, it is almost impossible to directly translate into another language. I have found the article to be extremely interesting to read and very much recommend it. The part that I found most interesting was the example of how translation can be extremely frustrating. I have tried using Google Translate to make a joke in Dutch to my Dutch friend but, according to him, the end result was completely nonsensical. I did not do any further research as I found that the article gave sufficient explanations and examples in a well written manner.
