The Study of Suicide: Nora Mayral

Emile Durkheim studied different groups/classifications of people that were either Protestant or Christian, and he found higher suicide rates in Protestants. He also found that compared to people romantically involved, single people had suicide rates, people with children, compared to those who didn't have any had lower rates, and that soldiers also had higher suicide rates than civilians. After analyzing these results, he was able to find root causes for suicide and identified what he thought to be the 4 basic categories/types/reasons of/for suicide. They were Anomic Suicide, Altruistic Suicide, Egoistic Suicide, and Fatalistic Suicide. Anomic suicide was identified to be an extreme response when a person feels hopelessly disconnected from society. They feel like they are unable/can’t/don’t want to be a part of society.  Altruistic suicide is like a sacrifice of types. A person that would commit altruistic suicide, would usually do so for the greater good that they believe in, or a political cause. Egoistic suicide is very similar to anomic suicide, as it’s a result of society and social interactions. In this case, they commit suicide because they have/feel as if they have a very week/no social bonds. This type of suicide is commonly found among the elderly, who tend to have lost many people in their life, and most likely live alone. Lastly, fatalistic suicide occurs when one is under such horrible or uncomfortable circumstances, that they’d rather be dead than alive, and have to suffer. We see this type of suicide a lot in prisoners.
Personally, I feel like suicide is more complex than just a few categories. I think that mental health, and situations in today’s society are far more complex than when Durkheim wrote his book. However, as we see society becoming more complex, suicide rates start to raise as well. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the number per 100,000 people committing suicide have been climbing. From 2008 to 2017 3.4 more people out of every 100,000 committed suicide. The number was 11.6/100,000 in 2008 but raised to 14/100,000 in 2017. While looking at race, it was found that statistically White people committed more suicides(15.85)than any other ethnic group, with American Indian and Pacifical Islanders(13.42) in second. Also interestingly, suicide is the second leading cause of death for those ages 15-24. I feel like it’s important to notice that age group. I feel like we as a society tend not to acknowledge teens with depression. Too many people seem to see teen depression as something unreal, and it isn’t treated as often as older age groups are. Teens are expected to act moody, so they aren't taken seriously. This is a huge problem that has to be solved. Just in Dallas, when looking at 14-17 years olds, suicide rates increased by 79 percent from 2012-2016. As well as not getting diagnosed for depression, another likely cause of this is the rise of social media, and the effects it has on teens.
