The Political System of Chad

The Republic of Chad is an example of a presidential republic. This means that the current president, (Idris Deby) is both the head of state as well as head of government. However, in recent years, there has been disputes about the current president. In fact several coups have been attempted with the most notable one happening on May 1, 2013. Several individuals that have not been named attempted to destabilize the country by assassinating the president. Fortunately, security forces who were watching closely apprehended the individuals. They found out later that they were planning this coup for months now. Even before this, current president Idriss Deby, gained power by overthrowing the last president Hissene Habre. After the rebellion, president Deby won several presidential elections, one in 1996 and one in 2001. There are several political parties in Chad, and the current one, the Patriotic Salvation Army, is ruling right now. Some other parties are Rally for Democracy and Progress, led by Lol Mahamat, as well as Federation, Action for the Republic which is considered as a  radical opposition party that supports federalism. This party is led by Ngarlejy Yorongar. President Idriss Deby has been quite active in the neighboring countries affairs and struggles, such as Mali. As well causing more controversy when marrying a leader of a militia. In 2013, it was revealed that the president had been suppressing several critics that spoke out against him. Also he apparently did not fulfill promises for human rights which caused some dispute. However people do seem to like him, because he has won several elections by a landslide and has been president for 24 years.
