The Politics of Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a parliamentary representative democratic republic, which means it has a prime minister who is head of the government and a system of multiple parties. These two parties are the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Bangladesh Awami League. It has a constitution that was established in 1972 which specifies this form of government with a prime minister as head of government and president who is elected by the parliament of Bangladesh. This president serves as head of state, and serves a five-year term and can serve two terms. The president is also in charge of appointing the prime minister from the legislative majority party. There are 350 seats in the parliament of Bangladesh, 300 of which are filled through election. The remaining 50 are reserved for women for women's empowerment. The current prime minister of Bangladesh is Sheikh Hasina, a 72-year-old woman who has been serving since 2019 and is on her fourth term. Bangladesh is a relatively stable country that is focusing on development and economic growth, but it has its share of issues. It has had issues in the past involving women's rights, religious freedom, modernization and more. The two main parties of Bangladesh have clashed over these issues since the government was formed.
