Interview 3
My challenge project topic is healthcare in the United States. The third person that I interviewed for my engagement project was Carlon Burt. He works at Bryston Myers Squibb which is a pharmaceutical company. He is the regional business director for oncology, which means he is responsible for the sale of cancer medication. I wanted to interview him because he works in a pharmaceutical company and would know about the pricing of medications, what contributes to the costs of medications, and what pharmaceutical companies are doing to make medication more affordable for people. In our interview, we talked about the process of making medication, pricing medications, patents, costs of medications, insurance companies, and things being done to make medications more affordable. The thing that stood out to me the most during this interview was the cost and programs put in place to help people pay for medications. Pharmaceutical companies actually have programs in place to help consumers afford their medications. The only problem is that the insurance companies sometimes won’t allow their clients to use those programs to pay for those medications. I also learned that it’s not just the pharmaceutical companies that make medications so expensive but the insurance companies also contribute to the cost, which is interesting because a lot of the blame for high medical prices is put on pharmaceutical companies. It was really interesting to learn about all of this from a pharmaceutical companies perspective because I hadn’t really considered their side and views of the problems in the healthcare system.
