Immigration to the United States
People from all over the world began fleeing their countries to come to the U.S in the late 1800s because of the economic chances that were available, some came to be free as well. The immigrants entered through different ports depending on where they were coming from, one of the popular entrances was in New York, called “the golden door.” After settling the immigrants must find jobs to sustain themselves, but because the immigrants looked different there was a lot of “tension” which effected their wages. The women were paid less than the men and the men were paid less than the average worker because they were immigrants. The immigrants changed the culture when they arrived to america, which showed that having a diverse group of people can bring a positive cultural change.

The story of Mrs. Lucinda Permien Holze starts when her father emigrated from Germany and went to Texas. Mrs. Lucinda went with her husband and his family to Germany and opened a shop, sadly after building up their shop and making money two theives came in one day and threatened Mrs. Lucinda and her husband with a gun and stole all of their money, they never were able to get their money back.
In the Boston Herald, they spoke about the Chinese vs. negroes. Chinese were seen as the smart immigrants who came to make new discoveries and take our money whereas the negroes were seen as the slaves who immigrated to come work for us. The negroes were allowed to get citizenship in the discussion of “can the Chinese get a citizenship” was up in the air as well. The negroes came open-minded, they followed the American flag and no matter how you treated them they followed their religious beliefs.
The French Canadians migrated to the states to be textile mill workers to make money so they could sustain their families. They didn't want to become citizens for many reasons, one being that they already paid taxes back at their Canadian farms and they did not want to pay taxes twice. The families from Quebec sold all of their belongings to afford their train tickets so they could come to the states with no savings and start over, and make more money.
