Interview Blog 1
For my first interview I interviewed Naomi Terr (my mom) who is a private lawyer that works with death penalty cases. This interview was more of a practice run so that I wouldn;t make mistakes in my future interviews. I still learned a lot, not only about how to interview but about the death penalty. Naomi Terr first got into social work when she took a job at cps. She often talks about how awful some of the things she saw while working there. She decided that she wanted to help people, and one way to do that was to become a lawyer. When she started law school she wanted to become a prosecutor but as she was taking classes she decided that she wanted to work as a criminal defense lawyer. As a college student she took several death penalty clinics which is why she decided to work closely with the death penalty. Before she went to law school she never gave any thought about the death penalty but when she did give it some thought she saw it as wrong and unfair. So she decided to work for an organization that helps out defendants that have been either wrongfully convicted or unfairly prosecuted. She has been doing that for 17 years now. When I asked what she disliked most about her job she commented about how unfair the system can be and how many problems the system has. As well saying that “the system is so disturbing”. Most of her cases have ended with something less than death, most likely life without parole which she explained is still bad. She talks about how cases take a tremendous team effort and all of the cases that have succeeded are because of a lot of people’s work. At times her job can be dissapointed specifically one case where one of her clients were clearly intellectually disabled (which goes against a verdict by the supreme court) but no court seemed to acknowledge it and her client was executed. She also explained that hoepefully in the next 10 years one by one each state will abolish the death penalty and eventually the supreme court will rule it unconstitutional. Naomi Terr brought a lot of new information to me and I was glad to interview her.
