Thoughts on Engagement
For my engagement on bike lanes, I really want to try and help motivate people in the Houston area to ride their bikes more often, by helping to show the bike lanes that one might not even know about. The reason I want to mainly focus on Houston is not just because it is where I live, but also because of the fact that more than half the population of Houston owns and uses a car. When one uses a car, it releases carbon emissions that go up into the atmosphere. Having more than a million cars burning fossil fuels every single day is causing an unhealthy Earth that is resulting in global warming as we speak. While biking helps to reduce carbon emissions, it also helps one to stay in shape, mitigate stress, and help prevent diseases. This is extremely important as everyone is stuck in their homes and stressed out because of this new and foreign virus. At the same time, it is still important to keep in shape. find a way to keep one’s mind off things, and to stay healthy. Going on a bike ride can help with all these things, even if it is just once a day.
Although to motivate people to start biking, they need a safe environment to do so. This is why for my engagement, I want to make some sort of flyer that I can post all over Houston as well as send a digital version to our classmates to show the bike lanes and other infrastructure that are present in Houston. I also want to emphasize the positive effects that biking can have on a person's health and life. To do this though, I want to talk to people that have been helping others ride their bike such as local bike shops as well as people that have been biking in Houston for their entire life. For example, I am interested in contacting Clark Martinson who is the executive director of Bike Houston. This organization has been helping to improve bike infrastructure all throughout Houston. I also want to contact a local bike shop called Planetary Cycles, which has been helping people bike since 1994. Hopefully, all of the people and companies that I contact will give me insightful information on the bike trails they find most accessible and safe throughout Houston, but also what they have been doing to motivate people to ride their bikes.
