Thoughts of Engagement
My topic that I wrote about was gun violence in schools, investigating the mental effect it has on students, as well as how it impacts their feelings of safety at school. Interestingly enough, the past few years for gun violence were only increasing. 2018 was deemed the worst year for school gun-violence, and 2019 wasn’t far behind. This year, these numbers are only going down, and it isn’t because on any gun control measures the government took, or even any of the indirect solutions that I discussed in my paper. It’s because of the coronavirus. Nationwide schools are shutting down, leaving students to go to online school. Almost every school in the nation is closed. This obviously, will virtually end gun-violence in schools, or at least for the next few weeks/months, depending on how the virus progresses.
For my plan of engagement, I plan on creating an infographic-style pamphlet addressing these issues, as well as discussing how this gun violence affects students, and their experiences with it. I have contacted two of my friends who attend Bellaire, who have agreed to be interviewed. This infographic will include information or quotes from these interviews, but will, of course, omit their names for their privacy. In this infographic, I also want to discuss the American school system, and how it might affect these issues, and how our public education system may leave American students predisposed to such issues. Hopefully, this infographic will educate people on the true dangers of gun violence, and will inform them on how we can take steps towards reducing gun violence in schools in constitutional, and safe ways.
