Thoughts on Engagement
My 2020 Challenge Project focuses on whether or not Houston is prepared for an outbreak. Ironically, Houston is currently facing the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, a novel virus with over a million cases, 70, 483 deaths and 270, 249 recoveries. As Houstonians adapt to a social distancing lifestyle, it is important that individuals feel like they are part of a community. Maintaining social connections and staying up-to-date on information regarding the virus is critical to defeating this viral battle. Using the knowledge I gain from interviewing professionals in the medical field as well as those who have been effected by the outbreak, I am going to create an infographic that will be spread to different audiences through various media platforms:
Neighborhood: I am going to create an educational flyer to put on my neighbor's doors. These flyers will include tips about the virus, advice from medical professionals, myth vs fact (like this https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public/myth-busters), and other important information. I would like to include some images to make the infographic more original and intriguing. The flyer will also have a link to a West University facebook page to help all neighbors stay connected in the case of a heightened emergency (needing to share supplies, update each other on our health, etc).
Social Media: A digital version of this infographic will be put on my social media and the Post Oak School's social media to raise awareness with to our Post Oak Community. I will talk with the development team about how I can share my information through the school so that it can reach a larger audience.
Email: A digital version of the infographic along with a video will be sent to high school and middle school students. Students can forward this email to other individuals. Once again, this will shine a light on what medical professionals have to say about the pandemic and provide reliable information on the virus. The videos will make the email more engaging and will hopefully intrigue more people to read the flyer.
Overall, gaining insight from professionals in the medical field as well as non profits who have been affected by the virus will help me come together and form an infographic that will help further educate the Houston community on the current pandemic. Having a link to a page where people can connect can be reassuring to individuals living alone. I want this infographic to bring people together mentally despite of having to separate physically. Community awareness is key to conquering COVID-19 and hopefully, this project will help the people I know feel more confident about facing the situation.
