Anthropology Terms

Adaptive Mechanism- Adaptive mechanism is when an organism adapts to a changed environment. This process is helpful to many animals that are capable to do this. When some animals migrate but move to different living styles, sometimes it’s necessary to go through this process.  For example, fish called Stickleback fish have a gene that, when in a salt water environment, switches on to grow protective spines. In other words, there's no gene mutation. The gene is simply switched on when needed.

Enculturation- Enculturation is when an individual learns about another culture and traditional practices. Enculturation is what teaches about outsider cultures that are centered in a very isolated place. People travel in peace in hopes of learning about someone else way of living. Enculturation examples are usually published in magazines. Enculturation can be the learning of your own countries history. Like in the U.S, we learn about the constitution. Enculturation is also learned without you knowing it. When we were all young, we maybe saw our parents buy groceries which has taught us how to buy groceries when we mature.
