Anthropology Terms - Andy Walsh

Cultural anthropology: The study of contemporary and recent historical cultures all over the world.  The focus is on social organization, culture change, economic and political systems, and religion.  Cultural anthropology is also referred to as social or sociocultural anthropology. Cultural anthropologists study social systems and how the community would run. They look at different things that the people in a certain group did and how leadership, religion, etc. worked in their group. Cultural anthropology is crucial because without it we wouldn't know the meaning of many things that people may find and we would know much about how the life style of there previous humans that walked our planet. Cultural anthropologists use a form of research called "participant observation" which is a process where researchers live in the community and get a first hand experience of daily life in their community.

transculturation: is what happens when an individual moves into another society and adapts their culture. A good example of transculturation is colonization. When the Europeans began colonizing the Americas, many people began to take up European values. That's why many countries in South America speak Spanish and are Christian/Catholic. When the Spanish came they brought those values with them and changed that whole area.
