Cultural Universals: Cultural universals are traits that are shared by all of humanity collectively. No matter where you live, you will see many of these types of traits such as: being classified by age, gender, race, and sexuality and children being raised in a family/ group setting. One example of this in modern times is music being set to a certain type of person. In the U.S., country music is set to people taken to be hillbillies from the south like Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi while rap music/ hip hop is set to the African-American Community
Sapir-Whorf hypothesis: The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis was an idea formed by Edward Sapir and
Benjamin Whorf that stated that stated that the language that we speak changes the
way/predetermines the way that we see the world around us. An example of this in our present day
world is in our jobs. There are many jobs that are generally perceived to be the job for a woman or
vice versa. Some of these jobs are firemen, policemen, nurses, and librarians. The first two jobs are
usually occupied by men and the second two jobs are generally occupied by women. Because we
see these jobs this way, it is weird when we see the opposite gender working in a, generally,
opposite genders occupation.
