Acculturation

Acculturation is the process by which a culture is transformed due to the massive adoption of cultural traits from another society. It is what happens to a culture when alien traits diffuse in on a large scale and substantially replace traditional cultural patterns. An example of acculturation that comes to my mind would be the Japanese acculturation of American culture. In Japan, many American fast food brands have been integrated into Japanese culture, one of them being KFC. KFC is one of the most popular fast food joints in Japan, and has even become a big part of Japanese culture. KFC is so popular in Japan that in the year 2017, KFC Japan made $540 million dollars, and eating a meal from KFC has actually become a Christmas tradition in Japan. Despite the major popularity of KFC in Japan, KFC is an American fast food company, originated in North Corbin, Kentucky, but it has become a major part of Japanese culture.

Participant Observation

Participant observation is the action of physically and emotionally participating in the social interaction of another society on a daily basis in order to learn about its culture. In practice this usually requires living within the community as a member, learning their language, establishing close friendship ties, eating what they eat, and taking part in normal family activities. An example of participant observation that comes to mind is actually an experience of my own. This summer, I acted as a participant observer in a community called El Calabacito, an area in Los Pozos, located in the country of Panama. I was in Panama for six weeks, where I lived with a host family and acted as a community member, immersing myself in their culture in order to learn their culture. The culture in this community was very different from the American culture that I was used to. They spoke a different language, wore different things, had different behavioral norms, etc. But, nonetheless, I immersed myself and adjusted over-time by acting as a participant observer.
