syncretism
an amalgamation or incorporation of traditional and introduced alien culture traits.  In Southern Mexico and Guatemala, the Maya Indian combination of mutually exclusive indigenous religious and European Christian beliefs to create a new composite religion is an example.  Syncretism is often a psychologically more satisfying alternative to rapid acculturation that totally replaces indigenous cultural beliefs and customs since one's own cultural identity is maintained.

Example: Gnosticism-  “Gnosticism is a modern name for a variety of ancient religious ideas and systems, originating in Hellenistic Judaism and the Jewish Christian milieux in the first and second century AD” This religion like said, uses many spiritual ideas and beliefs from the 1st and 2nd AD, and also ideas from now. The highest peak of the number of people who believed it was in the 1860s. From there, many people stopped, but there are still a handful of people who do still believe in Gnosticism.

transculturation
what happens to an individual when he or she moves to a new society and adopts their culture.

Example- Along with transculturation is colonialism. When the Europeans went and colonized North and South America. They brought their traditions and combined them with the ones of America. Much more colonizing have happened this is just one.  The influx of many people coming to a land and combining their cultures.
