Like isn't Lazy

The article was about how some people want to speak grammatically so they don’t use the word like, but that like is a grammatical word. Since like is used typically with young people the author refers to it as a” Corpus is a representative sample of language as used by certain speakers.”
I think it was interesting how the author takes examples from a TV show "Love Island" because she gets one line and puts the word like into the sentence and the meaning changes slightly each time. She also says that in the show the actors say "like" or "um" not because they don't know the line, they do this because it adds a different meaning to the line. You might think that like makes the whole sentence stand out but it only makes a specific part more relevant. She says that it is not only like that people use unconsciously but some people also use intonation, mainly "up-talk". Up-talk is when a speaker uses "rising intonation at the end of the utterance." Like is a multi-purpose word, but because of this it might its end. This happens because all the use of like are being pronounced the same way which makes it stand out. The author says that just because someone or a group of people are not speaking correctly don't call them out because, it takes away from what they are saying and, it might make them more closed off.
I say like very often, that when I got to Mexico I will be speaking Spanish and when I stop to think I will say like. The article has helped me to see that using like can be a good thing but it can also be a bad thing. I have also tried to say like less but this article has taught me that if you remove the word completely the message you are trying to say won't be the same. I have been told that using like in a paper isn't most formal thing to do but now I know that as long as I use it correctly it is okay. As long as the younger generations can learn how to use like the correct way it won't have a downfall.
