The Study of Suicide
Émile Durkheim was a french sociologist and the first to present a sociological study of suicide. In 1897 he published "Le Suicide", a book that suggested that social causes are a big factor of suicide. During its time, the common belief was that suicide was just caused by personal factors, so this book presented many new ideas. In the book, Durkheim studied how social factors like religion play into suicide rates. He found that Catholics had lower rates of suicide compared to other religions like Protestants, which he believes is because of the strong social constructs and practices of the Catholic faith. Men are also more likely to commit suicide than women, it's more likely for single people compared to those who are in a relationship, and less likely for those who are parents. One that I found very interesting is that while suicide is more common among soldiers than civilians, it is less common for soldiers during a war than during peacetime.
This data shows that suicide is not just caused by internal/emotional factors, but that social factors play a big part in suicide as well. A person is less likely to commit society if they are socially integrated and feel like they are a part of society. That is a person who feels like they belong and have people who care for them. Someone who does not feel connected socially and thinks they are alone and that no one who will care if they do kill themselves is way more likely to commit suicide. People can be very socially integrated, but events like a lost friend, spouse, family member or other loved one can send a person into social isolation that can cause loneliness, depression and alcohol or drug use, which all can potentially lead to suicide. People can feel more connected to society when they have friendships, family, community and other social ties. In conclusion, social integration is one of the most if not the most important factor that leads to suicide.
