The Asch Conformity Experiment
The Asch Conformity Experiment shows the power of conformity in a group and shows that simple things are affected by the influence of the group.  This experiment was taken in a university where a group of men participated in a “perception test”. In this group, there was one person that was a “ confederate”. The group was put in a classroom and were given two cards, one with a line on it and the other with three different lines, and the had to match the same lines together. The test was put so that the confederate would answer first and he would sometimes answer correctly and the rest of the time he would answer incorrectly. The goal of this experiment was to see if the real participants could answer correctly even if the confederate would answer incorrectly.
The results of the experiment showed that one-third of the class gave the wrong answer when the confederate did. Only one-fourth of the class gave the correct answer. After this experiment, they asked the people who said the same wrong answer as the confederate and they said that they thought is was the right answer. This experiment showed that we are shaped by the norms of our society. This means that the way other people act affects the way we act.
After reading this I wanted to know why people followed what other people in the room did. So I found some factors that have to happen to get the same results. There are many factors, some things that affect this experiment is the size of the group, if some people in the group have a higher social status, and the difficulty of the question. The size of the group affects this experiment because there are more opinions. If people in the group are respected by other people, those people will be followed. The difficulty of the question really affects this because when something is different people usually go to others for help.
I thought this article is very interesting and true. I have been one of the people that follow what other people answer.  I think I do this because I get confused and I think that since this person is smarter they will understand and get the question correct.
