Why Humans have to Consider Sustainability in their Lifestyle

The article "Sustainability and Luxury: The Ecological Intelligence in the Aspirational Dimension of Luxury" from the Journal of Socialomics contains a brief introduction to luxury in fashion and what role ti plays in our society. The main focus of the article describes our shift from luxury and fashion as a status symbol to a more globally aware perspective as consumers.

I'm not sure if we're actually suddenly more aware of the environmental impact that our consumption of the planet has an effect on or if we have just been gradually forgetting to be conscious of our intake. Perhaps our recent habit of depleting our planet's vital resources have reminded us to be more aware. Maybe we aren't meant to live on this planet where we aren't able to adapt to the limited resources that we have to eventually relinquish and give back. Or this planet isn't able to provide for creatures that have a desire to collect and store the objects of their material needs not only for the fact that it aids in the chances of their survival in the future, but also to boast about their success to those that aren't so fortunate or, in their line of thought, intelligent.

Is this tendency to covet for excess an innate disposition of our human nature or is it the result of a process that may lead to the downfall of our kind? The reason for our inclination to hoard our valuables is our priorities towards the well being of ourselves and of our success in the future. Our purpose to live is to live for ourselves and to see that we can thrive with progressive ease. In this way, we have isolated ourselves as a species fueled by greed.
