Government in Mexico
Mexico is a democratic federal republic made up of 32 states. The Mexican government is stable and the president was elected for his normal six year term. There are concerns that he might try to re elect himself, which is illegal in mexico because there are no re-elections. The president of Mexico (Andrés Manuel López Obrador) is head of the government. The country has a multiparty system (there many small parties but most of the elected representatives belong to 6 parties) and the president is the leader of one of those parties which is called “MORENA” (Movimiento Regional Nacional or National Regional Movement). There are 500 congressmen in Mexico, 308 of them are part of the same party as the president (MORENA). There are 128 Senate members in Mexico and 69 of them belong to MORENA. This helps the president because any law that he requests gets passed, this is good for him but not for the opposition. In Mexico, like in most democratic federations, there are three powers: the executive power which falls on the president, the judicial power which falls on the congress and senate, and legislative power which falls on 11 supreme judges. It is a check and balances system (they can say no to the president). The judicial power is appointed by the executive power, and is an apolitical (neutral) life term position. The current president forced a judge that opposed him into resigning and appointed a new judge that is biased towards him. The biggest challenges for the government are: health because the hospitals are outdated and there is not enough budget to fix them and medicines are old and insufficient. Also the security and the organized crime is the worst ever. After his first year as president the economy froze and there is no budget for what he needs to do. For the first time in Mexico the president does not represent the country internationally, he sends his secretary of state instead of attending any meetings. The president is considered by many as a “populist” (a term used when a president claims to be with “the people” and against the elite). There are unusual ways of governing, for example, he has stated publicly that he will tell on the criminals grandma ́s unless behave better or he is placing the presidential plan on a public raffle.
