Are Electric Cars Better for the Environment
The article Electric Cars Are Better For The Environment Than A 50 MPG Gasoline Car: Report claims that electric cars are much better for the environment than a gasoline car. I disagree, for example, the Tesla model S has a lithium filled battery pack that weighs 1,200 pounds. It does a great job powering the car and it does have a zero emission “Rating”. Electric cars are not completely safe for the environment. Gas powered cars last much longer than an electric car and once they die out they can be salvaged for stealing and parts. An electric car, on the other hand, leaves a 1,200 pound battery behind when they are left for parts. Tesla does have a way to recycle these batteries but the recycling process has a huge carbon footprint and is worse for the environment. The average gas powered car has to drive for ten years until it makes the same carbon footprint as an electric car battery and most electric cars don’t last ten years anyway. Many people buy electric cars because they are efficient and don’t emit as much carbon into the atmosphere, and this is true. While the car is being used it is emitting little to no carbon into the atmosphere. When the car is finished driving and you are left with this huge lithium battery, that is when all of those emission ratings count for nothing. The truth is that even though electric cars are getting more and more popular gas powered vehicles will be around for a long time and electric cars might not be as good for the environment as you think.
