Prison Inventions
In prisons all over America the rights of the prisoners have been stretched to near nonexistence and there is not a lot the prisoners can do about it. They are left to rely on the public and those who believe in in prisoner rights. With the lack of rights comes the lack of necessities for basic hygiene and everyday life. However this is not the case because the wardens have just decided to take them way, there are multiple safety hazards that come with these objects. One of the biggest examples of this are toothbrushes. Toothbrushes can pose as extremely dangerous weapons when put in the hands of a prisoners. In just a few minutes the harmless toothbrush has transformed into a shiv of mass destruction. The prisons recognize this and began taking them away from prisoners in order to prevent murders inside in the prison walls. Another large staple that is getting taken away are pens. Similar to the toothbrushes can be used as shanks so the prisons leave them with only the inkwell which is very difficult to hold. With all these restrictions the prisoners are left to come up with solutions on their own. However this is when the prisoner creativity gets put on overdrive and they begin to create there own pens and toothbrushes. They do so in a way that still prevents the objects from being seen as dangerous allowing them to keep them.
With the prisoners left to fix their own problems one can only imagine that they begin forming bonds with one another and begin to teach each other new techniques to further perfect their prison creativity. As well gain a group to call family while they serve their sentence. The prisoners have been put in a situation where their creative limits are being tested and they need to adapt and break down the barriers that have been imposed on them. With help from each other this is just one of the many ways that they do so.

ReplyDeleteHas the public done anything to help with prisoner rights? Is it possible that prisons could implement more cameras so that guards could isolate the inmates who are injuring others with these pens and toothbrushes so that the privilege isn’t taken away from the others? Could more money be dedicated to prisons to try and aid this problem? Overall, this was quite an interesting article, and I am curious about what other things the inmates have creatively invented that they did not have access to.
