Further Investigation of Immigration

I chose to talk about Immigration and its effect on the United States. Along with that, Minnesota in 1870, the First Land, and German Immigrants in Texas.
In the late 1800s, the United States would receive an influx of immigrants. Many people decided to leave their homes for a number of reasons. Fleeing crop failure, land and job shortages and famine were the most common reasons for migration. The United States at the time was perceived as the land of economic opportunity. Along with this idea, many people just saw the U.S. as a fresh start, land of the free. Between 1870 and 1900, 12 million people would migrate to the U.S. Majority of them being from Germany, Ireland, and England. Some immigrants entered from both the East and West Coast ports. But the vast majority entered through New York, and it would get the nickname “The Golden Door”. In 1892, the government would open an Immigration Processing Center in New York. Once settles in, immigrants would start to look for jobs. But many employers would take advantage of the workers. Men getting paid too little, and women even less. It caused social tension, many immigrants would be insulted because they were “different” But in reality, they brought diversity to the United States.
There was a lot going on in Minnesota when it came to immigration. Living costs anywhere from 15- 50 dollars. (which now would be from around 300 to about $1000.) Now for the cost of building, neat and framed cottages cost anywhere from $600 to $800 for 4-5 rooms. For 5-10 rooms, it would be from $1000 to $3500. No matter what all immigrants worked every day. If there was not enough space, immigrants would find a way.
The First Land for many of the immigrants was New York. In 1855, New York opened Castle Green, at the tip of Manhattan. This is where officials helped immigrants change money, get railroad passes, etc. Here is also where immigrant literacy tests were taken. More than 5000 people a day were procced at Green Castle. Basically, in Germany in Texas. There are 3 stories from different people. Each explaining how they arrived in Texas and what they did to get an income. Most came with their parents, and would work to provide for the family.
