Further Investigation of Immigration- Sara
To investigate further on Immigration issues to the United States in 1800, I decided to read Immigration to the United States, Chinese vs. Negroes as American Citizens, French Canadian Textile Worker, and Recollections of a Norwegian Immigrant.
The first article is about the reason immigrants come to the United States, what type of immigrants came, and where they would go. Before the Civil War immigrants came from England, Ireland, and Germany. These immigrants came to the United States for better jobs, more land, religious freedom, and to give a better life to their families. Asian immigrants mostly came to the “Golden Door”, otherwise, known as New York. Although multiple immigrants stayed near the ports, cities with a small population would offer jobs and land for immigrants to go and live in the cities. Immigrants that would stay in the bigger cities would have to find a place to live and once they did they would have to find a job. Jobs where not very easy to obtain, once immigrants would get a job they would get less pay. This would happen just because they were different.
The second article compared Chinese and Black immigrants. According to the article, Black immigrants were better since they had no prior knowledge about the government and the Chinese were not as good since they had been under communism. They compared the black man’s mind to a woman’s mind, the reason for this was to show that a black man’s mind could be formed in a way to fit the community. With the Chinese, it was different since they were accustomed to communism, Confucius, and Buddhism. They said how the black man would fight for his country, go to church every Sunday, would follow the government, and celebrate holidays like an American.
The third article was about how Canadians would come to the United States to work in the growing textile industry. Multiple of these Canadians would still pay taxes to Canada and could not speak English very well, and for that reason, they would hesitate to come and live in the United States. The Canadians that did come to live in the United States had little to no money and they only had the clothes of their backs.
