Further Investigation of Immigration
For my further investigation I chose to read the link 'Immigration into the United States.' This article gives you an idea of many of the potential reasons of why people would want to come to America. Often they were seeking better economic oppurtunity, and for some people this is what they recevied, but for others they got far from it. To me it seems like many immigrants were mislead on the oppurtunities they would get in the United States. Instead of wealth, less famine and better work, they were stuck with barely any wage, terrible cramped living conditions, and lots of disease often in overpopulated areas. Many German immigrants found there way to Texas, and here they were often able to start there own business but they faced another challenge; Native Americans. When we think of immigrants we often only think of how it effected the people already living in the United States, but there is almost none put into the way this was effecting the Native Americans who were being forced off of their land more and more and often being shot and killed.
Another one of the links I clicked on was about Minnesota and I found it very interesting the way it was laid out. First it begins by listing out all the prices of homes, food, fences, farms and what it would take for someone to build stuff. There is a cost for almost everything and I think it's a little ironic how expensive it is because immigrants would come so that they could aquire more money, but in the process they had to spend every penny they had just to start a business, build a home or buy food. Many people would come to Minnesota because there is land and oppurtunity, but it seems to me like they would end up spending every penny they had before they were able to make any in return.
A third link I read was on the Norewegian immigrants and this was probably my favorite. Most of the time you hear about immigrants coming becasue they hear such great things about a country, but apparently in Norway this was not always the case. In Norway they were confused by the country and all that happened, presidents from normal people, everyone carrying a gun and shooting whenever they pleased, this was a different concept and disapproved by most Norewegians. When some came to the United States they were not always approved of and stayed very independent from the people already living here. I just thought this was interesting becasue from what I thought about other countries, when someone emigrates this is a big deal, but it is often to be able to benefit their families or other people and they are greatly approved for this. All of these areticles gave me a little bit of a new perspective of how not all immigrants and emigrants were treated the same, and also what was of importance and what wasn't to many people.
