Chinese immigration to the united states
During the California gold rush a large wave of chinese immigrants migrated to America. Most were attracted by the rumored gold in california but also came because of the economic chaos in china. But most were not intending to stay for long they wanted to work make money and then return home. This continued until 1870, other immigrants started competing for jobs originally reserved for the chinese. This resulted in prejudice, racial suspicion and anti-chinese riots. then the Chinese exclusion act was passed suspending chinese immigration for 10 years.
some years into the Chinese exclusion act David Philip writes about how the chinese in the country are hard workers and easily praised. He acknowledges the fact most industries are run by chinese labor and if thy were to go California would corrupt economically. But he seems to only see them as a source of labor, his respect is only shown through words praising their work.
R.W. Raymond A person working with mining statistic gives positive reviews on the chinese railroad workers. But like David Philip his respect is mostly revolved around their faithful work. He says "The Chinese put little faith in the promise of their employers, and are apt to stop if not promptly paid. they are the most reasonable in the matter of wages, and the most unreasonable exact, in the matter of payment, of all our laborers." This statement shows the chinese are little in flexibility but are faithful to the worker if they are rewarded. He also later states the quality Fidelity is one much yearned for in employers and one much carried in chinese workers. This is a quality that puts the chinese workers ahead of other workers and one much appreciated.
