Immigration to the United States

I think that it is shocking that 12 million immigrants came to the U.S. in a span of 30 years. Immigrants came for a better life that would be filled with freedom and relief. As immigrants came, people attracted them with jobs and land for farming. Even though the immigrants came for a better life, many did not receive that and were treated very poorly. Women were paid less than men, social tension, discrimination, styerotypes, and even physical and verbal abuse. Although they were treated badly, immigrants helped transform American society and culture and showed diversity and unity. New York, known as the “Golden door”, was where many immigrants arrived when they immigrated to the U.S. It was the largest port entry. I am not very shocked because it is on the coast and it had easy access. While some people in the Castle garden helped immigrants change money, buy railroad tickets, and find a place to stay, others did not find it very amusing. Some people said that they brought down property values and that they even “smell bad.” In 1892, on Ellis Island, a larger immigration station opened and caused more problems and many things went downhill. The people were more strict, with medical examinations, literacy tests, and many questions, and 5000 people were let in a day. But it was closed in 1954, which isn't that long ago. I think it was very sad of how immigrants were treated. For example, when a couple were in texas, the man got robbed and had to give the robber all of his money and then told the wife if she made a noise that he would shoot her. It is very sad of how they were treated because they came to the U.S. for a better life and many did not get the life they wish they got.
