Immigration to the united states
The articles I read talked about immigration to the United States around the late 1800s. In the late 1800s, people all over the world decided they wanted to immigrate to America. They came in search of freedom and economic opportunity. Seventy percent of the immigrants from Germany, England, and Ireland came to New York. New York opened a place in manhattan to help immigrants exchange money and find a place to stay. The new immigration services lowered property values. In 1892 the federal government opened a new immigration station on Ellis Island. On the island, immigrants underwent health examinations and testing, to make sure they should be allowed to enter the United States. The immigrant station closed in 1954.
Most of the immigrants stayed near the ports, but some of them moved inland and settled in states that promised land and jobs. Because there weren’t many jobs available for immigrants people would often take advantage of them. Migrants were paid less and they faced discrimination. Many immigrants from Scandinavia moved inland to the Dakotas. Because of a lack of recourses they had to use sod to make their houses. The articles also talked about a thing called American fever. American fever was when an immigrant visits the country they came from and tells people about how great America is. After the people hear about America they desperately want to immigrate and they do whatever they can to get to America.
