Thoughts on Engagement

For my topic, of modern Antisemitism, I would like to reach out to one of my Rabbis, Rabbi Lyon, who had a close relationship with my family in years past. Because my temple has experienced threats before and he has been at my temple, Congregation Beth Israel, for a very long time, I think he can help me with this. I believe that his experience and knowledge with Judaism will give me a greater understanding of how Antisemitism can affect a community, because he is a very important leader in our Jewish community. I learned that my dad has experience in this topic, and I just never had a conversation with him about it before. I asked him if he would be able to talk to me about this in some form of interview. We have a Jewish lineage that goes back for hundreds of years, so I am sure there are a lot of personal stories that he would be willing to share with me. For my project I was originally thinking of creating an online blog or some sort of public post about the topic, but I then realized that there is a possible much more effective way of putting out the message against Antisemitism. I would like to create an Anti-hate mix of a flyer and an infographic that can explain some parts of Antisemitism that might be overlooked by many people, and why we should stop unnecessary hate. I would be willing to put these up around my community if possible, and I think that I could make more than one to have some variety. Because I obviously cannot try to put out a message about a topic that I don’t fully understand, this will require research and hearing some real stories about Antisemitism, in hopes to get a true understanding of the topic. I think that if people see statistics or become aware of something that they had little to no idea still existed, they will become more conscious what Antisemitism really is and how much of an issue it is in our world today.
