My challenge project is focused on the Obesity Epidemic in America. I spent a lot of time thinking about how I can engage with this issue. I came to the conclusion that this is a huge problem and it would be pretty difficult for me to have any impact, however, while there is nothing I can really do to help bring down obesity in America, I can positively affect people in my local community. To me, my local community means my neighborhood. I chose to engage by educating people in my area about how to live a healthy lifestyle. I did this by creating a digital infographic that shows which foods are healthy and why. My interview notes from my interview with Dr. Gordon, who is an expert on physical activity and lifestyle-based research related to obesity, were very helpful when making the infographic. I also used my interview notes from my discussion with Drusilla Rosales, who is a Registered and Licensed Dietitian, for the nutrition part of the infographic. I preferred to make an infographic rather than a blog post because an infographic is easy to digest and pictures can make it more interesting.  I posted this infographic on the Nextdoor app so that people in my area can see it. I also decided to post it on various subreddits related to my topic. It was definitely very cool to see people viewing and liking my post which let me now that I was indeed affecting people in my community.
I learned a lot from this project about civil engagement. Firstly, I realized that it can be hard for teenagers like me to be taken seriously. Some people that you contact for an interview may not take you very seriously and just pass it off as another school project, but you have to be confident and show that you really care about that issue. Another thing I learned is that engagement can take many forms and there are so many ways to make an impact. This is especially true in today’s age, where pretty much everyone uses the internet and social media, meaning you can reach so many people just from a computer screen. If you are passionate about an issue, there is so much you can do to make a difference, not just for your community but for people all around the world.
