The Rollercoaster of my Imagination (Women's Suffrage) - Fabrício Guerra
Women's Suffrage
It seems like that for the longest of times, women have always been viewed as the "lesser" individual. For literal thousands of years, it has always been men in charge in almost every civilization since agriculture was invented. There are some exceptions (ie. pre-Columbus civilizations in Central America) sure, but for the vast majority women were only seen as caretakers to stay at home. In some societies even going outside was looked down upon. Thinking about it today, those rules were really ignorant, not because it mistreated women, but because the governments were missing out on half of the nation's labor pool. If women were given working rights the countries economy would skyrocket. That's what happened with nations like the United Kingdom during the Industrial Revolution (the economic boom was dedicated mostly to the rise of industrial machinery, but if women weren't working in those factories it would've made a significant difference). They rose from having to deal with Qing China's petty trade deals to beating China twice in the Opium Wars. This may not seem like such a big deal, but before the Industrial Revolution Qing China was probably the second biggest economical power in history thanks to its massive size which gave it access to numerous resources, and not to mention a massive population.
Moving away from Qing China, ever since discovery of agriculture roughly 10,000 years before Christ, it took humans all the way to the late 19th century to at least acknowledge that women were equal to men, and therefore should have equal rights. However, this was just European or European-origin women and they were very basic rights such as voting. There were still a whole lot of other women that were neglected, such as women of color. In America, the right for women to vote was given in the form of the 19th amendment, which was decided by a vote of the congress. This wasn't easy, as there were several states that did not want this amendment, beginning with Tennessee, and following with several other southern states. Comes to show that somethings never change.
The initiatives of the women's protests for basic rights may have not completed much, but it paved the way for the road of women's rights, and so here we are today. A lot has changed, nowadays you see women doing the same things as men, living their lives doing what they want to be doing. However, it everything isn't completely equal. There is a hotly debated wage gap, and women have to spend way more money than men to live (I like to say that's how it is because men don't really care as much about themselves than women do, but it is what it is).
