“Baby naming time? Here’s how people judge what’s in a name”
Isabelle’s Linguistics Blog
For my blog response I choose to read “Baby naming time? Here’s how people judge what’s in a name” the article is by Penny Paxman and David Sidhu. The article covers the results of a study that is about what certain peoples names make others assume about them. It talks all about how the sounds of certain names make people associate them with certain negative and positive traits. They found people with softer sounding names like “Anne” and “Owen” were assumed to be “agreeable, emotional and hardworking.” We're as people with the names “Kate” and “Kirk” were assumed to be extroverted and “outgoing.” I found the article really interesting and I agree with their points. However the part of the article that interested me most was when they tested if the assumptions about people based on their names were actually true. They said that studies have shown that people “might change their appearance over time to look like their name.” They tested to see if this was also true about their personality. Even though the study came out negative I still find the idea really interesting. People tell me that the names Isabelle and Izzy fit me perfectly, but Isabelle is my middle name. My first name is Miriam and a lot of people have told me that I don’t seem like Miriam. I have heard this so many times and I find it strange because both the names are soft sound, three syllabled, Hebrew names. So if they seem so similar in theory why do people feel so differently. I looked through the article again and the paragraph on association help me come up with a theory. In the article they talked about how association could alter people's thoughts about certain names. I think that association is why I seem more like an Isabelle people associate Isabelle with younger people. Where as Miriam is a name associated with older people so they don’t see me as a Miriam. I really enjoyed this article and how it got me thinking about my own name. I hope you enjoyed my blog post thank you for reading.
