Black Eyes Matter
For my anthropology blog, I read Black Eyes Matter. The article is about the author and how having a black eye for four months affected her. The reason she had a black eye was because of brain surgery that she had to have and the black eye was a side effect. She talked about how when she went in public that people would stare. The author thought that the stares were with a good assumption. She states in her article that 1/4 of African American wives are in a relationship with domestic violence.  The author was ashamed that people would look at her than to her husband and then look away in disgust. As Ashley (The author) Went through this journey when she had a black eye, she learned that our society has a problem with stereotyping. Ashley says that the people that encountered her when she had a black eye probably made a lot of assumptions, but she doubted that even one of them had come close.
After reading this article it really dawned on me about how we start to make assumptions about people without even knowing what is actually happening in their life. Because I read this article I definitely became more aware when I started thinking and assuming something about someone else life.
